A Quiet Place

The Gliderport, La Jolla, California

The very first place we visited upon arriving in San Diego, California was the Gliderport in La Jolla.  It wasn’t a planned stop.  Nothing for this trip was “planned” – there was just a list of many possibilities for whatever mood might strike us during our nine-day stay.  As we drove down North Torrey Pines Road toward our hotel (hoping for an early check-in), the brightly colored para-gliders floating over the Pacific Ocean caught my eye.  Curiosity was like a tractor beam, pulling us into the dusty parking lot.  I was completely unprepared for the quiet peacefulness of this beautiful setting.  The Gliderport sits at the edge dramatic cliffs overlooking Black’s Beach and the ocean.  The view goes on for miles.  Onlookers watch in awe and talk in whispers as paragliders gracefully lift off and descend on the strong breeze that almost continually blows there.  After a very early wake-up call, a five-hour flight, and the normal hassles of arrival and renting a car, we could not have chosen a better place to sooth our travel-worn spirits.

As it turned out, the Gliderport was only a 15 minute walk from our hotel.  I was tickled about that and took many strolls in that direction during our stay in La Jolla.  Sunset is a particularly magical time.  This small (and free) attraction is so worth a visit.  If you get the chance. just go….

{ The Gliderport – the place to sign up for rides and purchase snacks.  People have been taking flight from these cliffs in one form or another since the 1930’s }

{ Observers are required to stay in designated areas }

{ Life guards are on duty 24 hours a day here }

A perfect way to end a day by the sea in California…

  1. Some amazing shots!! Love the last one best!! So funny you should mention Blacks Beach, I stumbled by accident upon that place when I was a young surfer looking for the point break just North of Torrey Pines. Funny bathing suits they wear there! lol! Thanks for the share!

    • That’s so funny! I knew Black’s Beach had the reputation of attracting nuditsts but I wasn’t sure where it was. Imagine my surprise when I stepped onto the beach at the end of the rather difficult trail at the Gliderport and was greeted by an elderly gemtleman in all his naked glory! Quite a funny and awkward moment for me. Glad you liked the photos.

    • We did not do any gliding this trip but I think my husband has me talked into it for the next time. It’s definitely something I would like to try at some point in my life.
